Lord Baltimore I was born George Calvert.
He was born in 1580. He attended
Oxford University when he was 14. He graduated
from Oxford in 1597. He became the Secretary
of State for King James I in 1619. While he was
a Member of Parliament, he heard exciting stories
about the New World. He started a colony in the
New World and named it Avalon. It was a cold place
and it was hard to grow anything there. Eventually
he asked the King if he could trade that land for
some land further south. The king agreed
but unfortunately he died in 1632, before
he was able to see his new colony, Maryland, settled.
