Commonly Tested Lewis Structures
We draw Lewis Structures to predict:
-the shape of a molecule.
-the reactivity of a molecule and how it might interact with other molecules.
-the physical properties of a molecule such as boiling point, surface tension, etc.
Drawing the Lewis Structure for CH4
For CH4 you have a total of 8 total valence electrons.
Drawing the Lewis structure for CH4 (named methane) requires only single bonds. It's one of the easier Lewis structures to draw.
Remember that hydrogen atoms always go on the outside of a Lewis structure and that they only need two valence electrons for a full outer shell.
Video: Drawing the Lewis Structure for CH4
It is helpful if you:
- Try to draw the CH4 Lewis structure before watching the video.
- Watch the video and see if you missed any important steps or information.
- Try structures similar to CH4 (like H2O) for more practice.
