Jean Baptiste Dusable

This stamp commemorates Jean Baptiste Dusable. He was the founder of Chicago.
Jean was born in Haiti in 1818. He became a fur trader in St. Louis, Missouri.
Then Jean moved to Peoria, Illinois, because the British took over St. Louis.
The Native Americans help Dusable establish a trading business.
During his trading business Jean passed by a place called Eschikagov.
So in 1774 he built a cabin there, for his family. Then other people began
to move there. The settlement grew and soon became Chicago. That is how
Chicago became one of the greatest cities in the U.S.A
