Edmonia Lewis

	This stamp commemorates Edmonia Lewis. Edmonia Lewis 
	was a talented sculptor. Her most famous sculpture 
	is called,"Forever Free". It represents a freeman 
	greeting freedom. The freeman is making a fist in 
	one hand and protecting his wife with his other. 
	Some of Edmonia's other sculptures are busts of people
	 like John Brown, Charles Sumner, and William Story.
	  Edmonia's father was a black American and her mother
	   was a native American. Edmonia was one of the 
	   first black Americans to be known as a great 
	   artist.
