ANTIETAM

by Marcus S.

My Maryland symbol is Antietam. It is the place where the bloodiest battle in the Civil War took place. It was fought between the North and the South. "The Battle of Antietam" as it was called by the Union or Northern side who wanted to end slavery. It was called "The Battle of Sharpsburg" by the Southern side, the Confederates who wanted to keep slavery going. To start with, the Union had 87,000 men. At the Battle of Antietam, fought near Sharpsburg, MD., more than 23,000 men were killed or wounded. The Confederates had 41,000 men to start with. The Union had General McCellan. The South had General Robert E. Lee.
