Underground Railroad2> by Nkinge
The underground railroad was not a real railroad.
It was a lot of people who helped to hide run away slaves.
These people were called station masters and their homes or barns or
hiding places were called stations. The station masters also helped
the run away slaves get from one station to another by hiding them in
wagons or showing them ways to get to the next station. Slaves knew a
house was a station by a candle or light in a window. Many homes had
secret doors, false walls or false floors to hide slaves behind or under
and sometimes even a secret room. The underground railroad helped slaves
escape to freedom until the end of the Civil War.
